A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

Vintage Hagenbeck
Hagenbeck's first liger "breeding experiment". Reportedly the animals were sold to the Barcelona Zoo for 2 million dollars!!!!
1897: 7 lions, 3 boarhounds – The Great Veltran. First appearance in England, with dinner party with lions sat around the table, also 2 boarhounds pull a chariot with a lion in it.
1898: No cage act
1899: No cage act
1900: Hagenbeck’s mixed cage act presented by Richard Sawade - 14 lions, tigers, polar and Tibetan bears, boarhounds.
1901: Hagenbeck’s - 25 lions – Herr Julius Seeth
1902: Hagenbeck’s - lions, tigers, polar and Tibetan bears, boarhounds (numbers not given) – Richard Sawade. This seems to be a new group.
Thomas, Very good research, I am proud youngen. But what about those boarhounds, and "number not given deal?" That doesn't cut it. How many were there, where did they sit, what did they do, how long did he work them, how much meat did they eat, how many times did they shit on September 3rd 1902? :)
the numbers not given counts for all the animals of that act. They did some pyramid work and crazy shit for that time what we would call basic tricks now!
Thomas, "Crazy shit!!!!" If I had known you in 2006 when I was training Karma to corbette over Demetrios and Sparticus we would have called it a " tiger crazy shit" instead of a "tiger corbette." :)
Yeah I still haven't seen that trick on a video. But I have met a man and he will sent me a copy of a video of you at Marineland and a copy of big cats of the big top ! All crazy shit !
Hagenbeck rented animal acts to the blackpool tower circus:
