A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.
Dear Wade: I was looking for this because I just saw somebody today who had this tattooed to his back. By the way the next post (when you google rhinoceros in the blog internal search engine) says that the Western black rhino has been declared extinct, but I thought that Namibia allows some limited hunting of them still. There was another post I just came across which featured an Indian rhino and it was captioned "African rhino", at Vincennes Zoo I think it was. There was a second picture of an Indian rhino near the bottom which I think had to have been taken at Toronto Zoo in which case it could have been Patrick, the first Indian rhino born alive in North America, or in the Western Hemisphere, I think in 1973 at the National Zoo in Washington DC. He was named after Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan if I spelled that right. He was the US Ambassador to India and the UN. He must have been the guy who said "You're entitled to your own opinion, but not to your own facts." Patrick (the rhinoceros) lived at the Bronx Zoo for years before being sold to the Metro-Toronto Zoo. The first Indian rhino born in the Western Hemisphere was born at the Milwaukee County Zoo, but was stillborn. The Indian rhinos at the Milwaukee County Zoo shared their exhibit with Asian elephants. Do you remember that Indian rhino captured in Nepal named Mohan who lived at the Crandon Park Zoo in Miami and set the rhinoceros longevity record, and was the only rhino in history to wear shoes. He lived for years at the National Zoo in Washington DC and at the Metro-Miami Zoo where he died. Sincerely Paul
