I Have Often Wondered If The Mutt "Country Joe" Ever Thanked a Soldier or His Family For What They Gave So That He Could Be Free To Have An Opinion??

America's most shameful period was the "welcome back" given to the Vietnam Veterans.

  1. The trouble is that the wars we fight are rarely every about "preserving liberty". Our troups have been used as cannon fodder to further international agendas that have nothing to do with our country's safety or freedom. Any conflict, for no matter what the reason or goal is referred to as "fighting for America's freedom" to keep the public in favor of interventions. However, you can't fool all the people all the time, and the country is tired of endless war and supporting bases in 100 different countries to prop up the local economies where the bases are located. The government has long ago switched to an entity working for the betterment of the nation to the biggest assemblage of liars and schemers in the history of mankind. And, you'd be hard pressed to find a single individual anywhere who still believes that Vietnam was a good idea. So, maybe the young people of that generation (who were among the thousands of Americans who were sent to their deaths in the jungle)weren't so wrong in their protest songs after all.

  2. Anonymous,
Right or wrong, they as American citizens, did what their country asked of them. The "protst" was often used as an "alibi" for serving by timid folks. They had that right because soldiers of the past had given it to them.

There's where you and I differ (Ian by the way - forgot to sign my name). I believe 'the country' is it's incredible people, it's constitution, it's sense working hard to acheive (well that USED to be the way it was anyway)and the belief that, without government interferance and hard work you can acheive anything your talent will allow.
'The country' is not spineless, immoral politicians who use lies and obfuscation to try to bend the will of the people.

When you say "the country asked them" - "the country" didn't ask them - the politcians TOLD them to give up their lives for a meaningless, fruitless, intervention. Also, there are those who are born to be warriors and whose natural aggerssion drives them towards military life, and there are those who are unsuited and who will crumble into mental illness and addiction. It is not an indictment on those who are unsuited, it's just a fact. Which is why drafts during wartime will never work. My uncle spent two years in a German POW camp and spent the rest of his life in mental hell, whereas others went onto live normal lives. True, he was a volunteer, but totally unsuited for the horrors of war.

So, sorry, Wade, when the people (who are 'the country') are lied to win their support, it is not the will of the people, but that of slimey politicos.
