The Snowdon Aviary--London Zoo
The Snowdon Aviary at London Zoo, one of 57 examples of post war architecture and art recommended for protected status by English Heritage. In my opinion one of the worst designed Aviary's in recent memory. It's use of aluminum supports was what made it ground breaking and innovative at the time.
Lest you don't know, it's the SNOWDON Aviary because it was designed by Lord Snowdon, who was married to Princess Margaret.

Irrespective of how it is spelt, it is a terrible aviary for birds of most species.
ReplyDeleteWhen we saw it last year it housed only a few birds of little conservation significance.
I put it on a par with London Zoo's elephant house which was so awful that it is now no longer used for it's intended purpose.

ReplyDeleteI think the London Zoo like a lot of BIG institutions, and BIG individuals started believing their own press, and made some real blunders in recent history.
