John Herriott--Last defense of my love and loyalty for the United States

Sure makes me feel good to see a form of tradition being upheld in Europe.
Something we are losing more every day over here.

I agree with you completely, Buckles. In 1998, I had the privilege of being a participant in this wonderful circus festival with Jim Clubb's mixed act of 4 tigers, 2 lionesses, 1 liger, 3 leopards, 2 black bears and a hyena. The pagentry and splendor of this festival to honor Circus is unparalleled. A highlight in my life; a real honor to be part of it.

There were only two Americans there that year, the other being- Bello Nock. I was asked to carry a British flag during the opening ceremonies, because I was working a Clubb act. I agreed, and looking back I am very grateful they did not also request I wear a Bello wig.

An American carrying an British flag, because the act she was presenting was from England?.... Yet the American white tiger act of a few years ago presented by an English women, was allowed to represent Great Britian?....While the American white tiger act of 2000, presented by a Dutch gentleman represented the United States?....Shame, Shame....Is that how they do it in the olympics?......This is really a pretend world of make believe.....Both madams should have been more respectful.

.....I cant understand why somebody would not represent the country of the animals origins like William Voss. Especially if they had earned their living here for any length of time like Voss. I also cant understand carrying the flag of another country.

Proud American

I suspect it has more to do with showbiz and less to do with nationalism. Haven't we all seen plenty of American flags carried performers from elsewhere?

Mr. Trumble,
Carrying a flag as part of a pagent, such as a finale in which ever country you are working, be it French, German, Italian, or the Union Jack is a different notion then carrying/representing a country in a worldwide competition, lauded ad nausem as the circus olympics. Show some pride. I had a real dust up in Japan years ago, when they were not going to announce my act as "the All-American White Tigers", until they saw it my way. I agree with proud American, 100% Red, White, Blue. You sure better not make your living here for many years, then take the source of your lively hood oversea's and represent "your" homeland. Not unless you want to represent new high's in hypocracy and me, me ism. My family has served this great nation, that I am proud to call home, and even if that bit of resin was 24K, it is a pride that can't be had for a fancy buffet, and a back slapping hobknob.

  1. When I was on Sid Keller, out of Jungleland, in 1968, Spec had started for our opening date, and I was last, so I could walk around saluting, then head for the cage to begin the show. So since we have this inane discussion about flags, by the time I got by Sid he was out of flags, most of which did not represent nations, but were just multi-colored banners. Minus a flag, I did the walk-around waving my pith helmet. What does that make me, loyal to the East Indian military, or perhaps the Raj? No, it is merely a happenstance of show production. Some of you guys really need to upgrade the use of your time.

  2. Roger,
That's a brilliant and valid analogy to an international "circus" festival in which countries are represented, and announced/listed in the press, just like in the Olympics as they claim to be as valid as. I believe there is even a ruling about defector's being able to represent another country until you are a citizen. But I may be wrong? How about it John Herriott, loyal to America or disloyal. Let's set a Patriotism standard. I have attempted to establish mine.
What guys are you talking about that need to "upgrade the use of your time?" Are you serious about the helmet deal, I didn't think they really wore those.

  4. Spock,
How about we let the other Blog be the History Channel. Let's try to Captain this Starship into the next galaxy. History is to learn where/why it went wrong.

  5. Now, hold on a minute- let me get this straight. Because I carried a British flag for five minutes ten years ago in a circus festival, I am disrespectful and disloyal to America?? C'mon. Give me a break. This is ridiculous.

I was representing Jim Clubb and his act, not myself. Jim deserved the credit for that act. So when they came to me and asked if I would carry the British flag on Jim's behalf, as a courtesy I agreed. That's all there was to it.

My son served in the military in the Persian Gulf, other family members have also served including my uncle in WWII. I come from a proudly patriotic family, and I love my country. Don't insinuate otherwise because I didn't cause a stink when they asked me to carry a different flag. Causing a stink is your insufferable forte, not mine.

Look Wade, I realize this is your blog and you can blah blah blah about whatever you want- just leave me out of it. OR ASK ME. Just so you know, no trashing of Monte Carlo will alter my memories of the place. I had a great time.

Go find some other hornet's nest to whack.
    I'm outta here.

  6. Roger and Pat,
Heres how it works. Question was ask and answered in February. Post was printed in partiality, not to discuss said subject again, which you both have, but to give John Herriott a reference again to my loyalty as an American. Read the heading. I didn't discuss it, I just said "here it is." And nobody else has discussed it, except you two. Ask Buckles to zap it if you don't like it, but others not me, may be discussing it for many years. I got my question answered in February.
Geraldo Rivera has a blog, did you express your concerns to him. Air service to send condolences to a friend are lousy, but good enough to re argue an old issue? Classic as this blog attempts to address "show biz" personalities/issues.
For any who may think that the AR became strong because things were worse, I will suggest again, that was not the case. It was the same, just communications improved. This post was pulled off a blog 2 days ago in Floria, read in California, concerns sent to Africa, and said concerns sent back to Illinois. Things weren't worse, you just couldn't run that fast any more.
I had intended to only spend 20 seconds on writing the header and transferring the post, because I have upgraded the use of my time.
Anybody else with time to spare fine, me I was done with the subject in February.
Pointing out odd things about Monte Carlo is not trashing it, calling attention to this post is. Some times a shoe can be a little tight, and that will cause crankiness.
