A Blog designed for discussion of topics related to, but not limited to, Circus, Zoos, Animal Training, and Animal Welfare/Husbandry. Sometimes opening up the dialog is the best starting point of all. And if for nothing else when people who agree and don't agree, get together and start discussing it, it will open up a lot of peoples minds. Debate and discussion even amongst themselves opens a window where there wasn't one before.

For Darryl
Here is a picture the first year at Marineland when Soloman was still in the act. I had forgotten about all that "plunder" as Lou Regan would call it. The barrel, hurdle, bridge, fire hoop. It got real crowded when there were 17 tigers in there. Imagine finding room to sit 17 tigers up on the floor.
This doesn't really belong here, but to save you all checking through the blog....Having phoned a few friends in mainland Europe, I discover that Martin Lacey Jr is fine after being bitten at the end of last week. The hospital visit was a wise precaution.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Mary Ann and daughter for translating the article on
aucirque.com
My French is reasonable, but I didn't want to risk causing unnecessary worry by mis-translating something of that nature.
A bientot!
John.
John,
ReplyDeleteI really assumed it was not serious and the hospital was nothing more then to get a load of antibiotics.
Two years ago when I got tagged in Evansville, Indiana which required 27 stitches and ligament repair in my hand, and 22 stitches in my leg. I was in the dressing room with the paramedics for 15 min. and as they were getting ready to put me in the ambulance, 4 calls had come in from Florida. 2 claiming I had been killed, 1 claiming I had lost an arm, and 1 inquiring about a job opening. The Circus communications system in southern Florida rivals any thing Britain had underground during the war John, and the enigma was childs play. By the time I was out of surgery at 4:00am a dozen calls had come in inquiring if there was going to be a wake, or a quiet cremation. Contrasted with the following year when I was tagged at winterquarters which required 64 stitches and plastic surgery. Not a word, and to this day only the 3 assistants there helping were aware of it. LOL
And I am glad it was all right for young Martin.
Wade
Thanks Wade, Still have a diagram around here I drew my first day at Medinah Temple of the seating for the 17 act so I could learn the names. This was March 78.
ReplyDeleteDarryl,
ReplyDeleteThere are very few people who really know I was not "lucky", and was not handed a finely tuned "gift", and you are one of them. Lot a heat/pressure for a young man to be under, and it affected my relationship with Margaret.
Wade
Wade, I sympathize with you on this one. Outside influences contributed to the downfall of my first marriage.
ReplyDeleteMary Ann
Mary Ann,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it was outside influences as much as incredible pressure, and a desire to succeed and stay alive. Tony had already eaten one trainer, and a couple of months later at the show Darryl mentions he grabbed and tore the calf muscle of the the prop boss right leg, plus Joyce killed David Farr and I was about 24 with a 2 year old baby and had lost my father 2 years prior.
